The Accord Horizons Regional Council has announced the applications for its Community Funding to
provide an opportunity for their communities to engage positively and
constructively by helping to improve the quality of their awa.
These improvements could be in direct relation to water quality,
or in the way people connect with the waterways in the Manawatu Catchment. The
Accord looks to empower community groups or individuals, by holding information
sessions and providing access to resources enabling them to complete projects
which will assist in achieving the goals of the Accord.
Goals
Their goal is to improve the Manawatu- River,
the mauri (lifeforce) of the Manawatu- River Catchment, such that it sustains
fish species, and is suitable for contact recreation, in balance with the
social, cultural and economic activities of the catchment community. This
represents a community opportunity to develop leadership in catchment
improvement and capture the social and economic benefits of such leadership.
The four key goals are:
- The Manawatu- River becomes a
source of regional pride and mana.
- Waterways in the Manawatu-
Catchment are safe, accessible, swimmable, and provide good recreation and
food resources.
- The Manawatu- Catchment and
waterways are returned to a healthy condition.
- Sustainable use of the land and
water resources of the Manawatu- Catchment continues to underpin the
economic prosperity of the region.
What can you apply for?
- Their Manawatu- -River Leaders’
Accord grants programme focuses on helping you restore water quality in
the Manawatu- Catchment and achieve the goals of the Accord. Therefore
projects that focus on the vision and goals of the River Accord will be
considered favourably.
- Applications are assessed on
their environmental benefits, feasibility, community involvement and
long-term benefits to the region. Administration costs can be included but
must be reasonable and in line with the size of the project.

goals.
